Fun with reading & writing from KS2 to KS3

This is the presentation of a workshop presented by Jayne Wright (Specialist Lead Teacher MFL KS2) & myself at University of Bristol Graduate School of Education on 5th May to 40 KS2 and KS3 teachers 

In this workshop we explored the progression with reading and writing from Year 3 to Year 9. We shared ways to find authentic materials and how they might be adapted and exploited to teach reading and writing in the class room. There were practical ideas for everyone to use. Examples are in French but can be easily adapted to other languages.

Year 7 have done a little project on the zoo.  One class got very creative and produced models while the other worked on Powerpoint.  They are very impressive.

Ma ville

Year 7 have been doing a project in English, describing a tourist attraction.  Theyhad to describe it and promote it. For our linked learning project we decided that the introduction would be in the foreign language that they are studying.

As an introduction (and following from a course that I attended with Martine Pillette)-  I gave students a text about Bath where our school is situated. The students had a copy of the text to work with and it was on the whiteboard -  I have converted it to powerpoint for this post.

Slide 1 is a presentation of the text.  Each table looked at a different sentence and identified cognates, then words that they knew.  They had to try to guess what the unknown words were but did not share them with the class.Step 2 was to match the pictures with a sentence. They started by saying: Je pense que la phrase 1 va avec la photo d parce que ça représente une ville. etc.  No wrong answer as long as they could justify it!

Slide 2 is a pronunciation exercise. As we do a lot of pronunciation practice, they were able to pronounce most of the words accurately.  I asked them to find words with the sound -OU, AU, I etc... Then they practised reading the sentence they were given to look at the beginning.  Each table read their sentence as a chorus and other students listened and identified mistakes- ie:"on ne prononce pas le -p dans beaucoup".

Slide 3 speaks for itself.  It gives students an opportunity to scan the text quickly to find the required information.

Slide 4 is some of the vocabulary from the text to see if they can quickly come up with the English.  They also identified other words from their sentences and we worked out the meaning.

After this activity-  we did some memory games.  I had uploaded the text into Task Magic-  They had to avoid looking at their text to do the different tasks.

At the end of the lesson, they started planning their own presentation.  Their homework task is to research the town where their tourist attraction is situated and use the text as a model to write their own description.

C’est bientôt la rentrée!

La Rentrée-  This you will see all over France in August-  It means going back to school.  

What about you?  How prepared are you for la Rentrée?

You have bought your uniform, have a new bag, nice pencil-case and lovely pens, so you think that you are ready?  Not really!

You can forget a lot over 6 weeks and unless you have been on holidays in a French speaking country, you have not heard, read nor spoken any French since you left school.

How can you get prepared?

Have a look at my two posts :  Que faire pendant les vacances? and on recommence.

You can build your vocabulary by practising on different websites like the very good www.languagesonline.org.uk .  Have a look at the grammar as well, it is quite easy to follow and you will be well-equipped for coming back to school.

You can also download the home version of Task Magic , You will access a wealth of vocabulary and grammar resources and learn while playing. 

I have also created a few games on Quia-  This will cover most topics and are mostly vocabulary games

Look at the advice given by other teachers, this will help you getting prepared for the rest of the year.

 Remember:  Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!!

Ma journée au Parc Astérix

I have come across the website- Fotobabble while looking for inspiration on Russel Stannard's excellent website-Teacher Training Videos.

I thought that Fotobabble would be excellent for students to record their own work from year 7 up to year 13. You upload a photo or website and record directly on to the site.  You can then e-mail it, embed it on a website or send to a social network.

Year 8 have been writing about the activities that they did during their recent activity week. I have recorded my own experience of a trip to Parc Axtérix near Paris.

Listen to it and use it as listening comprehension or do a similar activity yourself.
