Le sport

Year 10 have been working on the topic of sport.  We looked at a text from 1 jour, 1 actu.  

First step, read the text aloud, students follow with ruler and cross out letters that they can't hear with a pencil.  This make them realise that s, t, d etc at the end of a word are not pronounced.

We then looked at vocabulary.  Students were given 4 colours and in groups worked on the text:

Green- I know the word :  (je connais)

Orange- Cognates :       ( mot comme en anglais)

Blue- Word I have come across before- not sure:  ( je ne suis pas sûre)

Red-  I do not know:  ( je ne sais pas)

Last- students had to research 5 words in the dictionary and feedback to other students in the room.

 

The students progressed well during the lesson and have to do the questions for homework.

Le commerce équitable

Year 9 are looking at Fair Trade.  We started our lesson by watching a clip (the first 2 mins 30)- We gave our opinion on the clip that we had watched.

I gave students the words cut up. This helped them focus on the sound and written words.

Then students were issued with the script. They followed it with a ruler.  The aim was to notice pronunciation.  I then played it again and put the sound to mute , when I stopped the recording, students had to say what the next word would be.  

We then coloured the text according to words we knew (green), cognates and words we thought we sort of knew (orange) and words that we did not know (red).  Students had then to find words in the dictionary.  Next lesson they will need to share the vocabulary that they have researched with other members of their group.

The next lessons will be spent exploiting the vocabulary, building sentences and discussing the text.

Mrs Reid, an English teacher at Oldfield has produced the following Powerpoint and worksheet to help you when you research words in the dictionary. 

What do you need to remember when looking for a translation?

• A bilingual dictionary has 2 parts

   -  the 1st part i for French to English words

    - the 2nd part is for English to French words

• It is also worth looking at the front of the dictionary, this where you will find a list of abbreviations as well as phonetic symbols.

• Dictionary are not "stupid". 

    -If you cannot find a word, you may have mispelt it or it could be that you are looking at a verb so you will need to put it in the Infinitive form.

• Check that your word did not have a capital letter as you may looking for somebody's name r a place (town- country etc)

Now look at the Powerpoint and attempt the worksheet.
